This paper is intended to determine whether regularization programmes of illegal inmigrants have a magnet-effect. In this respect, the last amnesty carried out in Spain the year 2005 is analyzed using a comparative case study approach. This is done by the application of a synthetic control method that is suitable for the evaluation of policies at a country level. Our results suggest that the stock of inmigrants was an 8% higher three years after the amnesty took place.
